Teacher Jack had the effective method for our students in studying. It is different from other teacher's method, but our students really love that. That time, teacher Jack's age was not so older than us, but he was really more academic than us so much. We believed that he had been educated by the higher advanced US school. Today, A lot of Vietnamese student would like to study in US because they believe that they can get good knowledge from there. Thank you for Teacher Jack because he taught us, and that was our dream came to true because we could study with good teacher from leading country for all fields on the world. Many thanks my teacher, Jack Peterson!

List of things I remember
1. Many of the classrooms were at blocks called A7, A30 however A7 impressed us the most.
2. The block was an old one floored building with yellow walls and plain wooden tables and benches.
3. The classroom were all old, simply equiped and quite dark.
4. In front of the block we had a quite big yard to hang out playing some games like shuttle cock.
5. Daily the boys in class had to walk in class with a halogen monitor on shoulder because at that time we didn't have PowerPoint equipment.
6. My class had about 35 plus students, most of them were from other provinces even the North of Vietnam, nearly 1500km from the University.
7. We were excited as we had some foreign teachers from America who speaks standard English to help us improve our pronunciations like Pro Jack.
8. We also had some activities together with the teachera like learning some dances, cooking etc.
9. Most of our classmates were girls, they were nice, only 7 boys in the class. We had such a great 4 year course together with many unforgettable memories. We acted plays, did teamwork, went out for camping etc. To me those were the good old days that we lived such beautiful days of our youth. I love my friends so much. Always wish them be healthy, happy and successful.

Vietnam Memory

I was a student of Mr. Jack Peterson at Dalat university more than 10 years ago. He was one of the teachers who gave me a lot of motivation in acquiring a foreign language, especially in terms of listening and speaking as well as cross-cultural understanding. Almost all students in my class were really interested in Mr. Jack's lessons. At that time, there were about nearly 40 students in my class (sorry i couldnt remember the exact number). Regarding classroom space, it was not too big, but spacious enough for our language learning activities, the tables were unmovable, but the teacher could rearrange for his classroom activities.

In those days, you had sense of humour. You were friendly and helpful. We participated in some plays with many useful and interesting activities such as comedy, tragedy, music performances. In speaking test, I had to answer some difficult answers for the situations and conversations made by me and my friends. You and some foreign teachers visited a remote village with us.

I remember Mr. Peterson in two different things: a young teacher who was strict with students and a nice young man who was extremely interested in the lifestyles of ethnic peoples in Vietnam. He was young, handsome and strange to me when he came to the class. He would be the very first foreigner I had ever met until that time. I was a little bit scared of his tall and thin body. Though, he taught us for a year, many of us liked the way he taught us and the way he asked us to do the tasks. They were something new and helpful. Some kinds of homework such as: collecting 15 signatures of foreigners, playing roles in speaking, acting plays ... made us speak English more and more fluentlly. He was or 5 years older than us, so what he was interested in was exactly what we were. Specially visiting the villages of minority ethnice peoples in Langbian mountain. We had some good trips together though we didn't talk very much. He was in many pictures of us although he was not very interested in posing for pictures. From the bottom of my heart, I had many things to regret about the relationship with the teacher. I wish I had spoken English better at that time, so that I could communicate with him more easily. I wish I had understood what he was feeling when he was in another country, so that I would spend more time with him to share his homesick and introduce him more about Dalat and Vietnam. And now, I wish he would come back to Dalat one day and we will be able to live these old days again.

A List of Classroom Memories

My class usually learned in A7, A8 buildings at Dalat University.

Jack is the most respected teacher of my class. We are students of AVK26B class, Dalat University, academic year 2002-2006. My class is unique in that there are many beautiful girls from many parts of Vietnam, only a few guys in the class. Mr. Jack taught my class the second year of American literature and Reading, he was very young at that time so he was an idol of my class girls.

We were excited to look forward to Jack's classes because the atmosphere in the classroom was great, if our team did an excellent job, he would reward us with a good coffee or ice cream. In order to change the atmosphere in the class, he often played guitar, the boys in the class sang very well. He played guitar for boys to sing English songs. If I remembered right, Hung, a hotboy of the class sang “Donna Donna”, another boy sang “Top of the world”. The class clapped loudly and praised Jack's ability to play the guitar.

The most memorable memory in our student life was the play of classic plays. Jack assigned each group different plays, we organized plays, role-plays, costumes. After finishing the lessons in class, we stayed at night to rehearse. Jack had a day to buy bread, snacks, and soft drinks for us. We just ate while discussing how each person acted.

I remember the most impressive was Thanh Van, the most beautiful Dalat girl in my class who played the princess in “the Sleeping Princess in the forest”, the group that got the best award. Our group played Romeo and Juliet, the other group played St. Patrick ..., many of the good plays we performed in the night of the foreign language department. Foreign teachers say this is the most fun night for teachers in Vietnam

In addition to the interesting classes in the classroom, we also would have picnics at the famous landmarks of Dalat such as Love Valley, Camly Falls, Than Tho Lake, Langbiang Mountain. The picnic related to our study topic, through which teachers and students were exchanged knowledge about culture, people of cultures. We heard Jack talk about America, American fairy tales, we told Jack about beautiful love stories in Dalat city, the places found in Vietnamese poetry.

Every lesson whether it was in the classroom or outside the classroom is really meaningful, we had the opportunity to get closer and better understand each other. So up to now, those memories are always in our hearts and will never be forgotten. Graduated for 13 years and was the mother of two boys, the memories of student life always come back. Those memories are probably a part of my life. They follow me all my life.

I want to say one thing in particular, Jack was a very young teacher at the time, he looked very cute and generous so many of my female friends liked him. The time Jack left us to return to America, many of us were very sad and felt a bit disappointed because we could not see our teacher everyday. Back then, phones and the Internet weren't growing as they are today, so it was difficult to communicate with each other. I remember once a week getting online once through the yahoo chat. There is a memory that my class cannot forget. My classmate later became the wife of Mr. Michael, who taught us some subjects in the third year. Now her family lives in the US and we often contact each other. Some of my classmates are also living in the US, we reconnect and review our memories.

We do a lot of group discussion, group projects and outdoor activities. We went picnic and played some games. I remember our class always had a very fun time. Those moments brought us closer emotionally and helped us improving in English skills. I remember one time we did our presentation and each one turned into a small play. Each group presented a holiday theme with custom and culture. We had a great experience in bringing our Vietnamese culture into activities.

Even though I don’t have much collection of what happened in your classroom, I do remember that you always gave us short stories in American Literature class to read at home to prepare for the next class. You would divide us into groups and ask questions related to the materials you asked us to read. A group of us including Thao, Giang, and I almost always got the answers right because we always prepared at home so we could get little prices you gave out to the group that had the most correct answers. Our classrooms were old with old wooden tables and benches and dark green chalk board. The old tables were filled with all sorts of writings and drawings so even if the students cheated for the test by writing materials on them, teachers wouldn't see. Most of us were very excited to have native language teachers to come to our small school to teach English. We did learn so much from you. You often talked about American cultures to us which I think is the way to learn the language. Because of you, Sally, and Brad, I had a dream of coming to America to visit you and visit Disney Land and see how people living over here. As you've known, my dream came true.

I had opportunity to study literature subject which was taught and instructed by teacher Jack Peterson. Remembering at that time when we were at 3rd-year student, I guess Jack was about 26 years old. A young, emotional, enthusiastic and experienced teacher. He is living in the teacher dormitory building which is next to the school football stadium and looking to the greenery vegetables field and the lake in front of it. The class consisted of 45 members but majority are female, only 8 male students in the class. We found it hard when joining any kind of sport activities. We often had the class in B11 building which is located at the farthest corner of the school campus. The classroom is not very big and we had a feeling of warm when it was cold. Though my job after graduating has not been related to literature, it still memorize myself a poetic feeling when recollecting that time.

Dear teacher, I can make a list of everything I remember in English, but I will do in Vietnamese instead.

The songs are summaries of the lessons that the teacher asks students to put into the melody of a certain song. - I still have pictures of you when you take part in common activities: Vietnamese teacher's day, camping, picnic, …

- In English lessons, foreign teachers often organized fun games, such as "There is hole on the floor" game. - On Vietnamese teacher's Day, the students used to perform singing and dancing so as to honor their teachers. On this day, foreign teacher used to wear Ao Dai (Vietnamese women's traditional dress), which made them really charming and shining. - In some lesson, we were divided into some groups to discuss about the matters given by teachers

There are around 10-15 students in my class, and most are from Asia, such as Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. The classmates are nice and friendly. Usually, we were separated into two to three groups, discussing different issues or having some activities. The circumstances in the classroom were relaxed and interesting. We had a quiz and an essay almost every week to check our learning performance. Students liked to grab a cup of coffee to the classroom during the break. - People from lots of countries - different cultural observation for learning English - at lunchtime, sharing numerous food information from all over the world - different perspectives on American culture - homework and sharing weekend stories - personal relationships between man/woman from other cultural areas, and they sometimes become a couple - different personal goals and learning purposes - Jack, Kavin, Matt, Candy? white teachers, definitely they are not the same caucasian which means they might have a different family origin: where their ancestors came from. however, as an Asian, I see just all white teachers. - The students' accents; it particularly influenced by who would be their teacher. in other words, a guy student meets a woman teacher, their English accents would follow a white woman in 20th. More simply says, they speak like a woman, but if students meet up a guy teacher in earlier stage of their ESL class, their accents would be a guys' accents.

Objects
- Bean bag in the corner of the classroom
- Sharpies
- Handouts
- Big rectangular tables
People
- Ye-Jung was proficient in all three languages she spoke: Korean, Chinese, and English. I remember she enjoyed taking a nap on the couch that was right next to the classroom.
- Jongkeun was a well-mannered gentleman who actively participated despite his innate calmness. His questions were often seeking word-to-word translation and he said simple responses like "sorry" and "thank you" quite a lot.
- Midum was very confident in her speaking ability. She did not actively participated in small talk in classroom, but when she had opportunity for public speech, she did it very fluently.
- Hansol was the "funny guy" in the classroom. He was quite playful and his facial expression with his widely open eyes often made everyone laugh.
Emotions
- Joyful
- Warm
- Relaxed
Other things:
- I remember one time Hansol asked what would the proper word to indicate prospect or rising stars in sports. And it seemed that he was trying to find the word-to-word translation for the word "꿈나무 (kkum-na-mu)", which is a combined word of 꿈 (kkum, means 'dream'), and 나무 (na-mu, means 'tree'), a figurative word for teens with full of dream and potential. And Hansol could not come up with other English explanation, and he just said "Dream tree?", which made all of us in the classroom laugh.
- Outside the classroom, people would hangout and study in the study rooms adjacent to the classroom. That is where each of us get to talk individually and bond.
- You would give us some "free time" so that we could talk freely, and personally record a list of things, either on the board or on the sheet of paper you brought. These lists were things like broken English or important expressions, or other things that is worthwhile of talking about. After that period, you would iterate through the list and ask the class what they meant by that, and provided other expressions that would be appropriate.
- Some people were shy and reluctant to speak up during class, but you made sure everyone gets enough time to participate.
- During the break before or in between class, some people would lie on bean bag to relax.

I remember the course name was called “American Classroom” we read, watch films, share thoughts, and we did presentation which Jack was my assigned teammate. It was at a small classroom, kinda dark and the window was small too. There were a few Korean classmates and Rongrong Liu was my classmate too. I can’t remember the book we read together, was it The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn? But it was a fiction that I am sure. I remember one day I was taking Amy’s class(Pop culture), and we were talking about American music, and Jack was like a pro to this topic. And literally change it to a music history 101. We also had a movie night at Jack’s house, I think it was Good Will Hunting, we had a work sheet followed with 6 or 7 questions. We made a few comments on it, shared a few scenes that was impressive. It was a lot of fun.

1. In the class of ESL105(American English Pronunciation), we have many cards on the floor which have different letters on them. Students are excited about the game we are going to do next. Professor Jack is going to split the group into two groups and there will be a competition. All the set-up of chairs like a half-circle. I enjoyed the game and class. As a second language learner, I feel that was one of the best times in my college.
2. It is 9:20. I wake up and I realized I am late for the class. When I get into the classroom, students and professors are watching a video. I walked into the classroom silently and try not to make any noise or other people's attention.
3. In ESL201(American Classroom), one of the best courses on the campus, I start to talk to my Chinese friends with a heavy accent. I try not to make myself and my teammates and professor laugh. The professor always has patient for all the students to finish their sentence. He is a respectful professor.

Indiana Memory

It was always a bit dim in the classroom, especially in those cloudy days. The lights in that classroom were not really helpful and Prof. Peterson always stood in the "dark front". The classroom was not big, but there were plenty of chairs connected with small desks. The chairs did not have wheels, so it was hard to move around. Most of the time we had 3 students on class and we all sit in the front row, but there was a period of time that one of us would prefer sitting on the second row near the wall side. There were several Equator students visiting for a month during the semester, and they were doing well on class. Before they came, I was nervous that the balance of the classroom won't remain long, but actually I missed them a lot after they left because it was not that crowded and full of discussions anymore. I remember the direction the projection screen faced and how big it was. The white board was far behind the screen so it was hard to utilize the board, so Prof. Peterson hardly used that board. He used Google Word most of the time and it was really helpful, because the big framework of every class is shown on it clearly and we can easily recalled what we learned on previous classes. Prof. Peterson organized that class really well - he asked questions throughout all sections of classes so we could have space to think and talk freely, and we answered the question he asked (with a blank for us to fill in to complete the question) on our last class with evidences from readings and all four modules (linguistic, academic, cultural, spiritual). The class overall provided us a free and safe space to express our ideas and thoughts, to ask questions, and to get used to this kind of American classroom style. I really enjoyed Prof. Peterson's conversations with us, as he laughed when we said fun things and answered our questions in details with seriousness when we were confused. The top1 impression for me of this class is actually his voice and his facial expressions, but those are hard to describe. It was the funnest class that I expected to attend all the time in that semester. I am an emotional person and I did not really got connected with Taylor University too well at that moment, so it was really comforting to have a class like this, that does not put too much pressure on me and gave me the hope that professors could have really great relationships with students. This is firmly proved right now, cause I am having other classes with other professors, but it was a lot easier for me comparing to other freshmen students to get along with the professors well in a short time. The words that jumped into my brain that we used in this class were "liberal arts", "contribute", "culture", "language", "due(?)", "group", etc. I remembered the feelings of being accepted/approved as I was expressing tons of personal thoughts, even the negative ones, and the emotion when Prof. Peterson was going to leave this campus. I had many thoughts of separations since I was just separated with all my friends and family in China and it reminded me some nice teachers I had in my middle school, and it made me sad to face this reality but also I accepted that in a short time.

I remember the one of our classes being very interactive, the class was with a lot of Asian students and they would make surprise noises every time someone said anything and I thought that was super fun. I remember in the classroom we had a great view from the trees outside and the big windows in the class allowed the sun come in. I remember laughing and making friends but at the same time feeling nervous of not understanding the language super well.
